Sandpiper
Bridgehampton, New York / 2024 / Addition
This renovation adds a one-bedroom apartment and a dramatic new entryway—transforming a single house-on-a-lot into a residential courtyard compound—in response to a request to rethink the existing pool house on a lot four blocks from the beach. The strategy for this design was to preserve what already exists while introducing a completely new program. The new building blends seamlessly with the old building through rigorous material clarity. Formally, the new design is a series of almost interlocking blocks with extruded windows and recessed voids that create a sense of visual rhythm. Long expanses of wood siding, coupled with wooden slats of various thicknesses and widths, are subtle material interventions that have a major effect.
