East Hollow

Suffolk County, New York / 2021 / Ground Up

This project involves the complete transformation of a 1970s home originally designed by Modernist Sarasota architect Don Chapell. While preserving this piece of architectural history was critical, the current program was in dire need of updating to fit the owner’s lifestyle. The original floor plan was long and narrow, flanked by the kitchen and living room. A central staircase disrupted the flow between these spaces, making the house poorly suited for entertaining—one of the client's main priorities. A relocated staircase improves circulation and a redesigned front facade supports the reconfigured layout, creating a house that has been carefully preserved and updated for the next generation.
