Ditch Plains
Montauk, New York / 2022 / Ground Up
Nestled in Montauk’s laid-back Ditch Plains neighborhood, this modest house was designed for a young, growing family with a love of surfing. That passion, and the area’s easygoing feel, drove the design’s scale, material palette, and character, which is inspired by the sun-bleached essence of 1970s surf culture. In the two-story volume, the monolithic upper level appears to float above the base, separated by a cushion of light. Meanwhile, the rich wooden ceiling of the single-story living room, when brightly uplit and viewed from the street, becomes a striking feature from the street.
