Lilla Lane

East Hampton, New York / 2021 / Ground Up

For this East Hampton house, the clients envisioned a social family retreat—one that fostered a positive relationship with the exterior environment, no easy feat given the proximity of neighboring properties. A rigorous approach to form placement emphasized the interstitial spaces, allowing the house to unfold around a series of courtyards. Inside, environments expand inward and upward; outside, they press outward while remaining contained by the courtyards. Tapered roof volumes extend the building to the site’s edges, anchoring the living spaces, while more private structures like the main suite are divided into private retreats.
